Hamilton out at Georgia Tech

Ten days after taking the job, former Georgia Tech quarterback Joe Hamilton is out as the school’s assistant director of player personnel following his arrest early Tuesday. The 1999 Heisman Trophy runner-up is looking at charges of marijuana possession, DUI, hit-and-run and having an open container of alcohol in his vehicle.

Hamilton was released from jail on bond Wednesday and on Thursday he resigned his job at Georgia Tech, a job he just started April 28.

“Today, I sadly accepted Joe’s resignation,” Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson said. “I now he has great love and concern for this program and always will. Both athletic director Dan Radakovich and I made it clear to Joe that we would offer any support he requires in the coming weeks and into the future. Joe will always be a part of the Yellow Jacket family.”

Police pulled Hamilton over because the vehicle he was driving matched the description of one involved in a hit-and-run accident. When he was pulled over, officers discovered an open beer bottle and a marijuana cigarette in his Ford Expedition, and Hamilton admitted to drinking a few beers and hitting another car, according to police reports.

Hamilton couldn’t walk a straight line for the officers and, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, failed two breathalyzer tests, recording levels of 0.193 and 0.199, more than twice the legal limit in Georgia of 0.08.

Hamilton was a four-year starter at quarterback for Georgia Tech from 1996-99. As a senior, Hamilton was named the ACC Player of the Year, won the Davey O’Brien Award as the nation’s top collegiate quarterback and was a runner-up for the Heisman Trophy.
