Friday Fish FryWEEKLY ACC WRAP-UP & COMMENTARY BY THE EVIL Q
jim@accnation.com

Time again to take a look at what is going on in ACC sports and make a few pointed observations along the way.

We’ll wrap up with our bits and pieces segment with some stories that you probably haven’t had a chance to see. This week we’ve included a picture that rivals the babies being thrown off a rooftop for good luck.

BASEBALL

In the Atlantic, Florida State continues to run away with the division followed by North Carolina State.

Over in the Coastal, Miami leads the division followed by North Carolina, Virginia and Georgia Tech.

We’re beginning to come down the home stretch as the ACC Baseball Championship Tournament comes up later this month in Jacksonville.

The ACC’s Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week honors go to a couple of freshmen.  Clemson’s Kyle Parker and Miami’s Chris Hernandez have picked up their first honors of the season.

ACC Big Ten ChallengeWOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The ACC and Big Ten announced their matchups for the second year of their women’s basketball challenge.

ACC teams picked up 8-of-11 wins in the inaugural season last year.

The games begin on Dec. 3 with Michigan State at Georgia Tech, North Carolina at Ohio State and Penn State at Florida State. The next day’s matchups include Northwestern at Clemson, Maryland at Purdue, Virginia at Illinois, Boston College at Minnesota, Iowa at Duke and Virginia Tech at Wisconsin. The final day of competition on Friday Dec. 5 will see NC State at Michigan and Indiana at Miami.

WOMEN’S GOLF

Six ACC teams earned slots in NCAA regional competition and Duke will have an opportunity to defend their national championship as the number one seed in the east regionals.

Duke has named Jan Dowling as their new women’s assistant golf coach.

The national championship will be played at the University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course in Albuquerque May 20-23.

SpauldingSOFTBALL

North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Florida State continue their ride atop the ACC softball standings with the championship tournament just a week away.

The ACC Player and Pitcher of the Week honors go to Georgia Tech’s Whitney Haller and North Carolina’s Danielle Spaulding (pictured).

With Virginia Tech’s Angela Tincher picking up her 2,000th strikeout and picking up a place in the ACC record books here is one last chance to get a look at the senior before she finishes her career.

TENNIS

Seven men’s tennis teams, nineteen men in the individuals, eight women’s tennis teams and seventeen women in the individuals from the ACC head to the NCAA’s.

  1. The pictures of Hansbrough and Frasor jumping off a balcony that showed up on the internet must have put Ol’ Roy’s heart up in his throat.

I’m thinking…..they weren’t thinking. Like….how does that broken leg play into an NBA career Tyler?

  2. Here’s my question: why aren’t college kids allowed to act like college kids? Throw out the fact that they’re college basketball players. Why are they being scrutinized for having fun? They’re 19, 20, 21 years old. This is what college kids do. Why is it that people think that just because they play basketball mean they have to spend every second outside of the classroom in the gym. It sickens me to see this become such a big deal.

  3. Will

On one level I totally agree with you. College is a time for young men and women to find themselves in addition (we hope) to further expanding their minds along the educational route.

I did a little of both.

But now really, do you have to ask why someone like Tyler is being scrutinized so closely? Aside from the fact he is literally a national college basketball celebrity, is most likely going to be a millionaire at the end of next season and, oh yeh, he’s on a scholarship? Will, Will, Will.

I wouldn’t want him in the gym every second outside of class. I would expect him to sleep and eat…..and if he just happened to do it in the gym then that’s cool.

I suppose the EMT side of me was figuring out how to fly him to the hospital due to a potentially life-threatening traumatic injury. The coach was screaming “You Numbskull”! The administrator was going, “Oh crap, here come the lawsuits and parent wondering what type of school we run here and……blah, blah, blah”.

    Maybe I’m just getting old.

  4. Q, you are getting old, but I agree with you. So maybe I’m getting old also.

There’s a difference between having fun and enjoying your college years and taking a risk that could impact not only your future, but your teammates, coaches and school. That jump looked dangerous.
