Not to dump on UNC two days in a row, (sorry, sorry - I’m really not a heel hater - I’m a UVa fan, but try dislike all other teams equally - I really do) but I hate it when people ascribe “winning the close games” to toughness or necessarily the coach’s genius.
Virginia won a bunch of close games last year and Leitao was brilliant. They lost a bunch this year, he is a moron. Baloney, I say.
More often than not it has to due with luck - a bounce here, a bounce there. And luck is normally distributed (a la a bell curve). Sometimes you get it, sometimes you don’t - it all evens out. For example, Carolina’s bad record last year and their good record this year.
